Overview

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

Irish poet WB Yeats

The “lighting of a fire” is key to the learning journey of each boy at the College, with the aim to ignite curiosity and passion, and foster perseverance.

The College’s Learning Framework is centred around the Harvard Graduate School of Education Project Zero – Teaching for Understanding framework. Developing content knowledge in a subject is very important. But it is not the only thing. 麻豆村 learners are expected to actively use their knowledge and skills to respond to unseen questions or solve real-world problems. We call it learning for understanding. In Visual Arts this may involve students learning about the Renaissance period through direct instruction, reading and discussion. In going deeper, students will be expected to compare the techniques of two Renaissance painters or assess trends across different artistic periods. They will then demonstrate their understanding through oral discussion.

麻豆村 offers a broad educational program catering for the individual needs of each student. From accelerated classes in Mathematics, Business Studies and Studies of Religion to a suite of languages, including French and Latin, and electives such as Physical Activity and Sports Science. The creative arts are also well represented. Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Design and Technology, and Software Design and Development are core offerings that benefit from 麻豆村' state of the art facilities and passionate teachers.

Of course, “filling of a pail” is vital in order to develop the vital skills of writing, numeracy and reading comprehension. Being knowledge-rich gives students the platform they need to critically analyse subjects and issues. These are skills that are explicitly taught, modelled and practised. They work in tandem with an emphasis on self-management, enabling students to maximise their learning time.

麻豆村' Extended Day Program is another learning innovation unique to the College. It allows students to stay back at school, do co-curricular activities and study under the full supervision of teachers and tutors until 8pm. They can also participate in the Science Hub. It means boys are free from distractions and can concentrate on their homework, revision and assessments.

It is just one of the many ways 麻豆村 dedicated staff go the extra mile to ensure each student achieves his academic potential. It’s also why the College is at the forefront in the delivery of quality education.

Our approach to learning

LEARNING RELATIONSHIPS

Connecting with and understanding students is key to their future success. At 麻豆村 a boy’s relationship with his teacher is the pillar on which all learning is built. 麻豆村’ teachers are dedicated to finding out what makes each boy tick so they can help him reach his potential.

Their aim is to create a motivated, respectful student who will be inspired to learn and feels comfortable in his environment.

Our extended school day means teachers are uniquely positioned to nurture a boy’s development through extra tuition, coaching and co-curricular activities. Interacting outside the classroom fosters a greater sense of trust and mutual respect, strengthening the teacher-student bond. This authentic holistic approach recognises that boys are so much more than just the sum of their academic studies.

麻豆村 teachers understand that prosperity in life is about having an inquiring mind and being curious about the world. They foster a dynamic learning environment that stimulates students and encourages them to question and query.

In addition, academic and year coordinators work together to monitor the boys’ progress and help with subject selection as they progress through school.

Boys in the 21st Century experience a multitude of distractions that can divert them from achieving their academic goals. 麻豆村’ teachers and teaching programs ensure that focus is maintained throughout the day and boys are able to concentrate on achieving their very best.

PERSONALISED LEARNING

Every boy who walks though 麻豆村’ gates is unique and distinctive. His individual talents will define who he is and the progress he makes in life. 麻豆村’ teachers are trained to assess where students are at in their learning development and give the appropriate guidance and instruction.

A boy striving to be in the top one per cent of ATAR will need different motivations and goals compared to a boy coasting in the mid-range and not fully realising his potential. 麻豆村 has student-specific programs in place to increase a boy’s confidence in his ability to learn and maximise educational outcomes. High-achievers will thrive in Mathematics or Religious Studies Accelerated classes while students with special learning challenges will receive the extra support and attention they need.

We locate where a boy is positioned on the learning journey and we meet him there.

Project Connect is one of our most effective and rewarding programs. Year 9 and 10 students interact with industry on a subject they feel passionate about and develop relevant strategies.

It is one of many exciting initiatives that makes 麻豆村 a renowned centre of scholarship.

LEARNING HOW TO LEARN

Providing the learning tools of the future will equip boys to confront the challenges they face in a rapidly changing world. Educational focus at 麻豆村 is not only on acquiring knowledge but furnishing boys with the methods and techniques to apply that knowledge in a range of different situations.

As intellectual and social agility becomes more and more prized in the work place, a capacity to adapt and tailor ideas becomes essential.

Awareness of dates, facts and figures is actively encouraged, but wrote learning is not.

麻豆村’ teachers inspire boys to think independently and self-monitor so that they can work out what strategies work for them as learners. In concert with our careers adviser, they help students identify and forge career pathways to cadetships, internships, scholarships and university.

Working within our acclaimed STRIVE framework – Self managing, Thinking critically, Reflecting, Innovating and creating, Valuing and Engaging – boys are motivated to become better learners.

Above all, 麻豆村’ teachers develop approaches that will lead to success at school and ignite a lifelong passion for learning.

SUPPORT AND EXPERTISE

麻豆村 teachers are engaged and passionate because they too are lifelong learners. Their skills are regularly being updated so they can share new knowledge in an interesting and enriching manner. This ensures 麻豆村’ boys are at the forefront of learning and receive the best possible instruction.

麻豆村’ extended school day enables students – both boarders and non-boarders – to study until 8pm, uninterrupted by home travel or screen distractions. On-site homework support through the Learning Enrichment faculty makes sure that study time is taken full advantage of, and many teachers stay back after school to offer specialised assistance. They are joined by a host of educational experts and former teachers.

Our range of post-class activities is being constantly expanded to ensure there are no idle moments in a boys’ education. The weekly Science Hub is a recent innovation that has become a popular club for students to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) interests.

麻豆村’ most valuable assets are the boys who make up the college. They are also its greatest support network. From Year Seven, students are encouraged to work collaboratively and exchange ideas. Taking a collegiate approach enables boys to engage as a team and learn how to solve problems.

Working together demonstrates what the modern 麻豆村 learner is all about. No-one is left behind.

FACILITIES AND TECHNOLOGY

麻豆村’ state of the art learning facilities give each boy the opportunity to make the most of his gifts.

In the arts, students access top quality resources that encourage the creative process and enhance technique. Our specialised visual arts facility, performance theatre and music tutoring rooms are designed to draw out the best from every student.

In Science, Mathematics and English, lessons can be delivered in traditional or groupwork setting, allowing teachers and students the flexibility to maximise learning. Our recently refurbished science labs now have the convenience of white board writable desks.

A highly personalised learning experience is central to the 麻豆村 ethos. As part of the 1:1 Learning Program, each boy has his own MacBook. This is an invaluable resource, particularly when offsite learning is required, and is supported by 麻豆村' IT help desk.

Students also have access to the Brother Liguori Resources Centre and tuition or targeted coaching.

Practical learning outside the classroom is key to producing well-rounded young men. 麻豆村’ Colo campus in country NSW has living quarters and agricultural facilities where students can put into practice what they have learned at school. There are also activities such as rock climbing, mountain biking and canoeing where boys also learn the vital soft skills of cooperation, team-building and resilience.

Year 12 can be a stressful time. 麻豆村’ breakout spaces are designated HSC areas with full digital assets where students can study together and share knowledge in a calm and productive environment.

麻豆村 also offers students in Years 11 and 12 the opportunity to undertake vocational education courses at the College, or at TAFE colleges nearby. These courses can fast-track their future tertiary studies and give them a head start to their chosen career.

Our Results

HIGH ACHIEVERS

The first year of the HSC in NSW in 1967 saw 14 麻豆村 boys, more than 10 per cent of the cohort, appear in the Order of Merit for the first 100 places in the state – five for Modern History, three for Mathematics, two for Economics, and one each for English, Science, Ancient History and French.

It was an excellent result, setting the scene for the decades ahead when, year on year, the College has produced strong HSC results that are significantly above state averages across a wide range of subjects. About one-quarter of boys consistently achieve ATARs of 90 and above, and at least 10 per cent ATARs of 95 and above.

From 2015 to 2020 40 boys have been acknowledged in the HSC All-Rounders List (students who score above 90 per cent in 10 or more units) and 22 boys in Top Achievers lists (for those who are placed in a subject’s top 20 results). During the same time, the College has posted hundreds of entries in Distinguished Achievers lists for students scoring above 90 per cent in a subject.

The College continues to make learning gains across the board and is committed to the academic development of every student.

Boys of all abilities are given the assistance they need to flourish in the classroom and beyond. Learning difficulties are addressed immediately and challenges that both stimulate and inspire are provided.

These measures ensure students are always progressing and have the best chance of succeeding in their studies.

STATE LEADERS

In its earliest years, St Joseph’s College was the most outstanding school academically in NSW, if not the country. In 1885, 30 out of 31 boys passed the Junior University Exam and gained more marks than any other school in NSW and Queensland.

In 1939, John Gallagher became the first candidate from a Catholic School to obtain the highest Leaving Certificate aggregate.

In the years since 1967, 麻豆村 boys have recorded the state’s highest mark in a subject 35 times, ranging from Mathematics, Modern History, Physics and Latin, to Classical Greek, Economics and Primary Industries.

In 2017, Thomas McGregor achieved the highest ATAR in the state (99.95). Michael Graeme Wells before him had recorded the state’s highest aggregate in 1987.

In 2020, a record eight students attained an ATAR above 99, 30 students achieved over 95 and 64 earnt more than 90. Dux Harrison Bentley (ATAR 99.90) was one of five 麻豆村 boys listed in State Rankings as a Top Achiever, and 63 per cent of College students achieved Band 5 and 6 results (80 marks or above).
